above-ground pit firing. smoke and magic

What an enjoyable winter morning at PJ Pottery! A group of my dedicated students had created pots for this pit firing and were rewarded with some fabulous results. We used a variety of combustible materials for colour and effects and now can’t wait to do another firing!

Rain, rain, go away

Here on our misty mountain we have had 4 days of rain and more to come, the mould is happy! The biggest problem is that pots won’t dry so heaters are on and the firings are very slow. On a happy note, my Mt Tamborine classes are full and running and a new 5 week course at Gold Coast Potters Mudgeeraba studio is about to start on 25 May. If you are on the Goldie and interested in getting into clay either for the first time or as a return, this is your chance.

learning ceramics

There is a chill in the air here on Mt Tamborine signaling the approach of winter. So, out come the jumpers and socks but not much interferes with getting creative and we are getting ready for term 2 of classes at PJ Pottery. There is one space left in the 10 week intermediate class on Thursday nights for people with basic skills in hand building and throwing.

I am excited to announce my return to Gold Coast Potters offering a 5 week introductory course in hand building and throwing. Classes are on Wednesday mornings at Mudgeeraba.

art + music = adventure

The other exciting news is that Tamborine Mountain Arts Collective TMAC will be hosting an Artisan Alley at the Long Sunset Festival presented by QMF featuring Angus & Julia Stone. This “radiant new music event” is on 30 April at Elysian Fields, Canungra. PJ Pottery teapots will be included in the TMAC gallery space.

Attendees will be invited to bring along greenware to experiment on with the underglaze colours, water etching, tissue transfers, sgraffito and carving. We will also play with surface treatments on leather hard clay like sprigging, stamping, inlay, applying slip and impressions with texture.

Bookings are now open on the Ceramic Arts Queensland website where you will find all the details.

pottery rocks!

Happy New Year! I am pleased to say that in 2022 pottery continues to go strong. My classes are full and back for term 1 and my students are as keen as to learn more about this wonderful craft. I am receiving commissions regularly, these are always a welcome challenge and I feel privileged to be able to create handmade pieces to order.

I love teaching and sharing my skills and so I am doing some short instructional videos that I will post here and on my social media pages. As a bit of a teaser, this is one surface treatment process using a thin masking tape to create lines in a glaze. This piece is not fired yet so you’ll have to wait with me to see the results!
